Extension Install Aftercare: First 48 Hours and Ongoing Care
· By BossLady Hair Studio

New extensions add instant length and volume. Caring for them well protects both the extension hair and your natural hair underneath, and helps you get the most from every install.
The first 48 hours
- Hold off on washing so attachments can settle.
- Avoid heavy sweating and steam where you can.
- Brush gently with a soft-bristle or loop brush, holding the hair near the attachment as you go.
Wash day
Use the right products
Choose a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and a conditioner suited to extensions. Keep conditioner away from the attachment area so bonds and wefts stay secure.
Wash with care
Rinse in a downward direction, avoid scrubbing at the roots, and never pile hair on top of your head.
Dry the roots fully
Damp attachments can loosen and tangle. Dry the root area thoroughly before styling or going to bed.
Sleeping and daily wear
- Sleep with hair in a loose braid or low ponytail.
- Use a silk or satin pillowcase.
- Brush gently every morning and evening to prevent matting at the base.
- Tie hair back for workouts and wet it and condition it before swimming.
Heat styling
Extension hair does not get natural oils from your scalp, so it can dry out faster — especially in the Arizona climate. Always use heat protectant, keep tools at moderate temperatures and avoid placing hot tools directly on attachments.
Keeping extensions comfortable
As your natural hair grows, extensions move away from the scalp. An Extension Move Up repositions them so they stay comfortable, secure and hidden. Your stylist will recommend timing based on your hair and install.
