Partial Highlight Aftercare: First 2 Weeks & What to Avoid

A partial highlight places brightness where it shows most — around the face, the part line and the crown — so it is a lighter commitment than a full head of foils. The first two weeks after your appointment have the biggest influence on how long that brightness stays clean and even.

The first 48 hours

Lightened hair is at its most open and fragile right after the service. Giving it a little time to settle helps the tone hold.

• Wait before washing. Skipping shampoo for a day or two gives the cuticle time to close.
• Keep heat low. If you need to style, use a heat protectant and a moderate setting.
• Skip the pool and the lake. Chlorine and lake water can shift a fresh blonde quickly.

Days 3 to 14

Wash less, and wash cooler

Hot water lifts the cuticle and lets tone fade faster. Lukewarm or cool rinses and two to three washes a week are usually enough for most hair types.

Choose color-safe products

A sulfate-free shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner are gentle on lightened strands. If you notice warmth creeping in, ask us whether a purple or blue toning product suits your shade before you start using one — overusing them can leave a dull or uneven cast.

Protect against the sun

North Peoria's sun is strong almost all year. A hat or a UV-protective hair spray on long outdoor days helps reduce fading and dryness.

What to avoid

1. Clarifying shampoos in the first couple of weeks
2. Swimming without wetting and conditioning your hair first
3. Very high heat on flat irons and curling irons
4. Box dye or at-home toners on top of fresh highlights

When to plan your next visit
